DIRT and Progress Dialogue

DIRTAll students at Thurston Community College are regularly engaged in reflecting on and improving their work through the use of DIRT (Dedicated Improvement and Reflection Time). As part of ongoing Progress Dialogues with their teachers, students will:

1) Complete key pieces of work to be assessed by their teacher or their peers.

2) Receive feedback from their teacher or peer including a ‘next step’ target that informs them how to improve their work further. Comments provided may be in the form of written or verbal feedback.

3) Be given time to reflect on their target and act on it, improving part of their work or developing a particular skill (DIRT).

The type of tasks that could be set might include: redrafting a piece of work; completing targeted questions to develop specific parts of their work; completing a new activity that develops the skill that they need to work on; engaging in further reading and adding new information to their existing notes; setting themselves meaningful targets for their next assessed piece of work and highlighting where they have met that target, and so on.

Throughout each term, students will have multiple opportunities to receive meaningful feedback on their work and the effective use of ‘Dedicated Improvement and Reflection Time’ will enable them to make sound progress in all of their subjects.

Students can also reflect on and improve their work in their own time. Possible DIRT activities that they can complete at home include: reviewing lesson notes and improving them; proofreading and correcting a piece of homework before submitting it; engaging in research on a topic and adding to lesson notes; testing themselves on key words and concepts they have learned and then correcting any errors.

Ultimately, the best way for a student to make progress is to keep taking small steps to move themselves forward in their learning. Through specific feedback followed by dedicated time to improve and reflect on their work, students at Thurston Community College are supported towards achieving and exceeding their academic potential.
